It’s my MARKet, so I’m gonna Share….for one last time. The short of it is, it’s time to say goodbye. Why now and where have I been the last few months? That’s the long of it….
If you care and/or have been paying attention, there hasn’t been a new MARKet Share since my post-election update in mid-November. That broke a near-perfect record going back seven years and 94 articles. Why? Quite honestly, for the most part, it’s because the election threw me for a loop. Or more accurately, the reporting and polling of the election.
My prediction had been that Hillary would win the election, though not by as wide a margin as was being reported, projected and predicted. Right up to and including election night, most news outlets, Fox included, had Hillary winning. Yes, I did see a few polls via the Drudge Report that were projecting Trump would win, but surely those couldn’t be right in the face of so many polls saying otherwise. Well, those polls were right. And nearly every legit, mainstream, you-name-it news outlet was wrong. Badly wrong. And my reticence in continuing with MARKet Share stems from the fact that here we are, about six months past the election, and I’m still waiting for an explanation from any of these news outlets. I want an explanation of how and why the polling was so wrong and more importantly, I want an understanding of how they will do better the next election cycle. I want to know that lessons were learned and that mistakes will be corrected. But I haven’t seen or heard any of that. Rather, it seems the established media have dug in their heels and it’s business as usual. But to me, it’s not. Not when they were so badly wrong. I need to trust what I’m hearing and right now, I don’t. Not from any of the outlets. They lost a ton of credibility in my eyes and so part of the reason MARKet Share is ending is because I’ve frankly become disillusioned with the news media as a whole and their inability and/or unwillingness to acknowledge and correct their work. Which was horribly, horribly sloppy. Especially as it relates to their polling.
I’m also leaving because this venue, Newsvine, is not what it used to be. To put it simply and without going too much into the inner workings, this is no longer a place where original content is rewarded or perhaps even wanted. Newsvine doesn’t let me easily share my work, they don’t let me collect the ad revenue I generate and it’s just no longer author friendly. There are better places to do this sort of thing.
Lastly, the whole thing started as a personal challenge. I love to write and I wanted to write more but wasn’t sure how or what. So back in 2010 I set up a goal of writing something fresh every month and sharing it here. And over time, MARKet Share evolved from being a collection of quick jokes and sarcastic one-liners about the news to more in-depth pieces, but still with jokes and sarcastic asides. I look back at the first column now and (self-indulgence alert) I feel I’ve come so far not only as a writer, but as a storyteller, and as a researcher and as an editor. I’ve grown along with my audience. But seven years is long enough to take on a challenge. I’ve got new writing challenges I’m already working on and ahead of me and I’m excited to see where they go. And MARKet Share may not be totally dead either. I expect I’ll get the itch to comment on the news again. It may be a podcast, a Vlog, a monthly column again, a new site somewhere else….I’m not sure. But something, somewhere, at some time. Don’t be shocked to see “It’s my MARKet….” pop up again. For the moment, the best places to catch me are Twitter (@mbergs12) and on Facebook.
What will I miss the most? Probably the immediate feedback. To see who agreed, who disagreed and then the debates that followed. I’ll miss making predictions on things in the news – a lot of which I got right and some I got wrong. I’ll miss finding and bringing little-known stories to your attention. I’ll miss my monthly podium to rail about injustices, hypocrisy, fights for equal rights and reminding readers that ALL Black Lives Matter, not just the ones taken by the police. I’ll miss making fun of the Lohans and Kardashians of the world. And no matter if you read all I wrote, or some, or this is your first time here, I’ll miss you. I’ll miss your attention, your time and consideration.
It’s not easy to say goodbye, which is also why this has been months in the making. More than 90 times over the past seven years, I’ve written “It’s my MARKet….” It’s a track record and body of work I’m proud of. And thanks to the internet, MARKet Share really will last forever. But for now, I say thank you. With all my heart and soul, I sincerely thank every one of you that ever read even one word I wrote. Your support, encouragement, thoughtfulness and yes, even your disagreements, have all been genuinely appreciated. I am forever in your debt. Until next time and until we meet again, goodbye and farewell…….
