It’s my MARKet, so I’m gonna share…Gloria Sachs, the creator of Capri pants died earlier this month. In tribute, she was buried with her legs sticking six inches out of the casket…Also dying earlier this month was Florida teenager Trayvon Martin. It is a tragedy whenever any teenager dies, but the ineptitude of the local police department combined with grandstanding from politicians and celebrities alike have made this situation even worse. In summary, here is what is known for sure – Travon was killed by a shot fired from the gun of neighborhood watch member George Zimmerman who had told 911 he thought Trayvon was suspicious. Following Travon’s death, George was questioned but not arrested by police. Beyond that, very little is known for sure. According to some, George confronted Travyon. According to others, Trayvon confronted George. They struggled. They didn’t struggle. Trayvon is an angel. Trayvon is a thug. George is a racist. George is a humanitarian. There are a ton more unknown facts in this than there are known facts. Yet we were all told repeatedly not to rush to judgment after the bloody glove was found on OJ’s driveway, so why has it been ok for there to be a rush to judgment now? The police rushed to judgment by not arresting Zimmerman based on his account. That’s insane. A man shot another man. Let a judge and/or jury decide if it was a righteous killing, not the local cops on the street. The politicians, racial and religious leaders all rushed to judgment too, deciding that by looking ridiculous and wearing a hooded sweatshirt in front of the cameras, they were declaring Zimmerman guilty of murder before he was ever charged. And of course the celebrities have chimed in. Most notably that great humanitarian and peace-maker Spike Lee. Spike decided it would be a good idea to tweet out the address of Zimmerman to all his followers and urged them to call, visit, mail and harass this man in the name of justice. Only problem was it wasn’t Zimmerman’s address. It belongs to an elderly couple who have now been subjected to the kind of hatred Zimmerman has been convicted of in the press. When he was initially informed of his mistake, Spike Lee said nothing. Only until the media made a big deal out of it did he apologize and at that time noted there should be justice in the courts, not on the streets. Oh, and he also graciously agreed to pay this couple back for the money they are now spending away from the home they no longer feel safe in. Roseanne Barr on the other hand tweeted out the correct address and is urging people to go there to make a statement. Does any of this bring Trayvon back? Does it help solve the issue of teenagers dying? So here is my question…where is all this outrage, these protests, these sweatshirts when every other kid gets killed? Any politician who wore a “hoodie” defending Trayvon before the facts have been laid bare should be removed from office. Was Zimmerman looking for trouble? I don’t know. Did Trayvon instigate an altercation? I don’t know that either. What I do know is what I said at the top – anytime a teenager is killed, be they black, white, red, yellow, purple, green or blue, it’s a tragedy. What makes it worse is watching people in leadership positions slant that tragedy for their own agenda or to garner publicity……Encyclopedia Brittanica announced they are discontinuing the print version of their long-time reference books. In the bitter taste of irony, most of the world learned of this via the internet……Game of Thrones is starting its new season as Justified is finishing up their current season. In the world of quality television, this is called a smooth transition……After two heart attacks in one month, comedian Gallagher has announced he will cease doing live concerts. Watermelons the world over rejoice………Think you can trust your local NFL executive? At the end of last football season, the Denver Broncos told Tim Tebow he would be the starter for them next season and then Peyton Manning came along. The Jets got spurned by Peyton and Jets owner Woody Johnson told the world they didn’t want him, causing fits of hysterical laughter to break out everywhere. The Jets then signed their now unhappy, mediocre quarterback to a three year extension, making him happy though still mediocre. Then the Jets signed the newly freed, though immensely popular and even more mediocre Tebow. The most popular quarterback in NY now is a backup quarterback who also happens to be a Jesus loving, showboating virgin who won’t be able to handle coach Rex Ryan’s tamest locker room talks because of the cursing. Oh, and the Jets starting quarterback is unhappy again. Gonna be an interesting football season in NY……The movie version of best-selling bookThe Hunger Games came out and broke all sorts of attendance records. The book was great at getting teenage girls interested in reading. The movie is doing that with the added benefit of getting teenage girls out of the mall and into the woods to stalk and kill deer……If you heard the news that Will Ferrell announced he is doing a sequel to Anchorman and you haven’t done a happy dance, you might have no soul……Keith Olbermann was just fired, again, from his latest TV gig. He is now 0-for-all the news networks except for Fox News, so there is still the possibility……no, probably not. And that’s good news for all of us…..OK, I’ve shared. Agree? Disagree? Share the joy with your friends. Share the outrage with your family. Have at it. See you next month.
